International Boundaries Research Unit About IBRU IBRU was established in by Professor Gerald Blake who served as the Units Director until his retirement in IBRU was the worlds first boundary research centre which was global in scope and it remains a unique source of information and expertise on boundary and territorial issues around the world IBRU is based in the Department of Geography at the University of Durham in northeast England Geographers have played a leading role in boundary studies for more than a century and IBRUs work emphasises the importance of geography in boundary-making and dispute resolution However the study of boundaries increasingly requires an interdisciplinary approach and the Unit works closely with boundary scholars and practitioners from a wide range of backgrounds in more than countries In support of its aim to enhance the resources available for the peaceful resolution of problems associated with international boundaries on land
