'About Our Fruit Introduction The peaches, plums, and nectarines grown commercially in California, as well as in the rest of the world, are descendants of species native to Asia. They are members of a large genus of plants, Prunus, that includes cherries, almonds, and apricots. Climate, soils, and availability of water for irrigation confine the commercial production of these stone fruits to selected locations in the United States, Canada, Europe, China, and Japan in the northern hemisphere and to Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand in the southern hemisphere. In the United States more than 30 states produce peaches, with most production concentrated in California, South Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Nectarines and plums are produced mainly in California with minor but expanding production occurring in the Southeast and Northwest.
