Archives of the London institution founded in 1247 as a priory, but which has been for most of its history a hospital for people with mental illness.

The Bethlem Royal Hospital Archives and Museum was established in 1967 as the Archives Department of the Bethlem Royal Hospital and the Maudsley Hospital, a postgraduate psychiatric teaching hospital which was formed in 1948 through the union of two world famous institutions. The Bethlem Royal Hospital, the original 'Bedlam', founded in 1247, is one of the world's oldest hospitals for the care and treatment of people with mental health problems. The Maudsley Hospital was founded in the early 20th century as a London County Council Mental Hospital, and rapidly gained an international reputation for psychiatric teaching and research.
